Description
St Bernardus Abt 12 is a very unusual beer and the subject of much debate amongst Belgian beer fans.
This beer has the distinction, and what a distinction, of being brewed from the same recipe as the Trappist beer that is now world-famous, by which of course I mean Westvleteren 12° Abt. This beer was voted best beer in the world in 2005, and since then it has become one of the hardest beers to find, not to mention one of the most expensive.
In view of this, Saint Bernardus 12 ABT is a very attractive alternative for anyone who is looking for something similar in terms of flavours, aromas and tasting experience, to those offered by the Westvleteren. St Bernardus Abt 12 is a strong Brown Beer (10% ABV) with fruity aromas.
On the nose it presents very fruity scents along with roasted notes evocative of caramelised malt, liquorice etc. In the mouth, Saint Bernardus 12 Abt has very little effervescence, but seems very sweet.
It also leaves roasted, fruity flavours on the palate. Light spicy notes reminiscent of liquorice and pepper can be felt on the tongue.
On the finish, flavours of chocolate, prune and brandy warm the throat and round off the tasting experience.
All beer connoisseurs in training should put this Belgian beer on their list of beers to taste. This really is a classic, and a nectar in terms of Belgian beers, and its very close similarity to the Westvleteren Trappist beer makes it an alternative if you can’t get hold of that nectar of the monks. But make no mistake, with this beer you will be drinking a nectar that is every bit as delicious!
